Bob's Vegas Adventure: Competing at the IBJJF World Masters and Jiu-Jitsu Con 2024

Anthony “Bob” Harding returned to Las Vegas for the first time since his 2008 honeymoon, marking his 50th birthday with an unforgettable experience at the IBJJF World Masters and Jiu-Jitsu Con. This massive event featured over 11,000 athletes and celebrated all things BJJ with competitions, seminars, and talks from elite practitioners.

Bob competed in the Masters 4 Medium Heavy division (88.3kg/195lb), opting for the higher weight class rather than his usual Middle division. With IBJJF’s strict no-allowance weigh-in rules, Bob wanted to avoid any last-minute disqualifications. Weighing in at 183.4 lbs, he was just a couple of pounds over his original bracket, a reminder of the challenges that come with competing overseas.

His match was set for Saturday against Michael Stephen Hanrick Jnr from Super System BJJ, Ohio. Despite nerves, Bob navigated the event's hustle, weighed in, and passed his gi check before entering the bullpen.

In the match, Bob’s opponent mounted him early and secured a bow and arrow choke just 1 minute and 30 seconds in. While it wasn’t the result Bob hoped for, his opponent went on to win silver in the division. Bob remains proud of stepping up to represent Combat Base Leeds and is grateful for the support from Tracy, Grace, Johnny, Nam, and all his teammates.

“Would I recommend this competition? 100%,” Bob said. “I had nerves and doubts, but I’m pleased I stepped up. Huge thanks to everyone who supported me.”
