On the 12th of May, we had athletes competing in Empire Grappling's Yorkshire Open at the Barnsley Metrodome.
First up, we had Toby Colling from the Combat Base Leeds Teen Team in the Gi, with one match in his bracket.
An early takedown put 2 points on the board for Toby. Despite a few scrambles, Toby managed to maintain control and won gold on points.
Next, we had Paul Sampson in a two-man bracket. His first time competing did not show, as he managed to dominate both his opponents. He won the first match on points and secured an Americana in the second match after a tough scramble to end up on top.
Ben Cole was next up for the teens, and he made short work of his opponent. Showcasing his judo, he executed a perfectly implemented Tomoe Nage straight to mount, finishing with an armbar.
Toby closed out our competitors, being the only one competing in NoGi with a tougher bracket this time around. Facing his previous Gi opponent filled him with confidence. Taking inspiration from Ben, he timed a nicely placed adapted Seoi Otoshi, sending his opponent face down to the mat. Top control led to a tight armbar for the finish.
His second match for the gold saw him face a little adversity. After escaping a nasty rear naked choke, he was still down on points. Managing to get to his feet, he went for his tried-and-tested throw and, after a little scramble, came out on top for 2 points and the gold medal.
Well done to all those that competed, showing your hard work and bringing back a full set of gold medals to the gym
