Steel City Northern Gi + NoGi Submission Open & ADCC English Open

Last weekend saw a few of the academy members head to Sheffield for the Northern Gi + NoGi Submission Open, this time with a couple of new additions to the competition team trying their hand at competing for the first time.

The event run by CurAik Martial Arts is a perfect event for anyone that wants to start to compete.

Toby Colling is leading the way and inspiring many of the members to compete, this young man has a serious future in the sport with lots of eyes on him at the moment.

With a 3 man bracket, Toby picked up 1 win with 1 loss to a very strong prospect, earning him a silver medal.

Having no match in the NoGi bracket, the organisers moved him up to the juvenile category. Giving up a couple of years in age, as well as a few kilograms made no difference to Toby, where he clocked up 2 wins in the round robin format, 1 via submission and 1 on points.

Alfie Humphrey's put on a stunning display for his first competition, picking up a gold medal in the Gi, smashing his way to victory and claiming a few feet for souvenirs, with 2 straight ankle lock submissions.

Another new competitor, Matiass Damiao had a tough bracket, but proved the time he's put on the mats has paid off. Having the largest bracket of the team didn't phase the Portuguese prospect, where he made light work of the run to the final with 2 submission victories, only losing in the final to bring home a silver medal.

A special mention has to go to John Canavan, who went down to the ADCC English Open in Coventry, picking up a gold medal in the advanced division, cementing his place as one of the best competitors in the country. With flawless transitions to secure a submission via arm triangle in the final.

Another successful outing for Combat Base Leeds, making coach Nam happy and proud.
